The Best Android Apps for CrossFit

Myfitnesspal CrossFit Android

Last time we did an app round-up, we looked at the best iPhone apps for CrossFit.

We figured it was only right to cover the other side of the spectrum for the Android community as well.

As avid users of technology we try to have a comprehensive outlook on tech trends that impact that CrossFit community, making our lives easier through software & hardware.

Let’s take a look at what’s on offer in the Android world.

MyFitnessPal

Available on iOS as well, the Android version is just as polished and a welcome addition.

It has the most extensive nutrition database, and allows you to count your calories if you’re particularly keen on watching what you eat

For those who have a Fitbit, it has direct integration with that platform as well so you can view your physical activity and overall food consumption / calorie tracking on their dashboard.

Coach’s Eye

Previously, it was a few dollars for the full fledged version; the folks behind the app have now made it free.

It’s a great app that allows you to record lifts in order to scrutinize and improve your form. There’s no reason not to download this app and incorporate it as part of your training regimen to review your lifts.

Approved by Coach John Vivian for it’s ease of use and intuitiveness.

Fitocracy

We’ve written about Fitocracy extensively before. It’s basically a gamified fitness logging platform where you can earn points and badges, and where you have a leaderboard to “compete” against others or the world.

For the avid runner, it also has RunKeeper integration.

Their fitness community is one of the best in the world in terms of friendliness and supportive demeanour. They have fitness enthusiasts from every discipline, so check it out.

WODBook

If Fitocracy’s community doesn’t do it for you, WODBook is another great option.

It is nicely done app in terms of design and user experiennce, which includes the basics in terms of tracking your WODS, and a fully functional stop watch feature, which accommodates AMRAP and Tabata workouts.

It has sections for PRs, and allows for calculation of percentages based on your PR when you’re starting a new training cycle without having to pull out a calculator.

One of the nice things about it is that if your gym has an RSS feed, you can just plug it in and it will be able to pull your daily WODs straight into the app. It’s almost having a personalised CrossFit app specific to your gym!

RunKeeper

We’ve written about RunKeeper on the iPhone guide, and it’s no surprise that they’re on Android as well.

RunKeeper is a runners social network that gives you feedback on your run in real time, provides your average speed, and saves your routes.

You can compare yourself to others, too, and also get encouragement feedback from friends.

You can even broadcast your run live online so, when you’re running a marathon, for example, your friends can check out your progress and cheer you on via the app.

HIIT Timer

A simple and no frills timer app that has a features specifically for tabatas, AMRAPs and such.

A trusty companion for when you’re doing a WOD at home or testing your own times at your gym.

Oh, it doesn’t hurt that it’s free as well.

Bonus mention:

Fitbit

Again, we’ve mentioned Fitbit in the iOS version of our Best Of Apps guide. However, having thought about it more thoroughly, it wasn’t well suited for CrossFit specifically.

It seems better suited for getting a general idea of your daily activity level and insight in terms of what times of day you’re most active.

With the combination of any of the Fitbit activity trackers, along with its Aria wireless scale (which we feel is its killer application, with it’s ability to measure body fat %), Fitbit would be a natural choice for data driven CrossFitters who are conscious about all aspects of their physical activity.
