With the explosion of smartphones and apps in the last few years, our phones have become almost like the Swiss army knives of our digital lives, which was brought to the world’s attention by Apple’s App Store “There’s An App For That” campaign.
(Not an iPhone user? Check out The Best Android Apps for CrossFit.)
As an avid CrossFitter and app consumer on both Android and iPhone, I’ve come across a good lot of apps that I’d like to share with you, so you can better use your data for your CrossFit journey and help you cut through the noise in the sea of hundreds of thousands of apps.
Here are 5 top iPhone apps for CrossFit that will help you make better sense of your fitness and CrossFit journey.
Coach’s Eye
I found about this brilliant app from Coach John Vivian.
For the price of a latte from Starbucks ($4.99), you can get yourself an app that allows you to record the form for your big lifts as you progress.
Some of the useful features are audio recording your coach’s feedback while they view your form, the ability to mark up your video with free form lines to highlight things like a rounded back while doing deadlifts, for instance. After you’re done editing, you can upload to Youtube to share it online or keep it private. Here’s an example
I’ve found it invaluable in getting and recording feedback from my coaches, as well speeding up the feedback loop to learn and better execute the big lifts without compromising form.
Whether you’re a new to CrossFit or a seasoned Olympic Weightlifter, having access to such a useful app will pay off in the long run, avoiding risk of injury.
RunKeeper

Runkeeper is a GPS enabled running and cycling app that allows you to log distance run/cycled, speed, average speed, on a map interface so you can view where you have run/cycled along with a few other key metric.
The beauty of RunKeeper is that it has audio cues letting you know how far you’ve run at pre-determined intervals.
If you want to If you decide to upgrade to their pro plan, you can broadcast your runs live as well if you’re running a marathon or a race.
Bonus feature: it hooks into your iTunes music player as well.
Fitocracy
I’ve written about Fitocracy before.

Fitocracy is Fitness social network that acts like a video game, allowing you log your data, “Level up” with points as a result of logging your workout data, get access to Quests, Challenges and Leaderboards to see how you stack up against the “competition”, as well as give “props” (like Facebook likes) for the workouts that you’ve logged.
There are literally groups for every Fitness discipline and sport.
From first hand experience, the users of Fitocracy are genuinely nice, have regular in-person meetups – simply put you won’t find another online fitness community that’s so supportive.
If you’re tired of logging your workouts on Excel, it’s time for you to join Fitocracy. You can download the app here
If you’re already a user of RunKeeper, they’ve integrated with RunKeeper as well so you won’t have to log any data on Fitocracy. Just load up your RunKeeper app, finish your run, and your run data will automatically appear on Fitocracy as well!
Fitbit

While free to download, you’ll have to get the hardware to unleash the full power of the Fitbit app and website.
Fitbit is a beautifully minimal and clever piece of hardware that measures physical activity in steps, sleep tracking via it’s pedometer and accelerometer, and even calories through its food database, all the while wrapping the user experience it all in a game-like dashboard that lets you compare and compete with friends.
Their Fitbit Flex and One products go for a reasonable $99.
Not too long ago, Fitbit released their Aria Wifi Scale ($129), which measures not only weight but body fat percentage.
In my case, while focusing on strength training, I wanted to know what my body fat percentage was and better understand my body mass index, as well as my lean muscle gain vs fat, which Fitbit does beautifully and seamlessly. You simply step on it (barefoot) and it automatically syncs your weight and body fat percentage data over the cloud to your Fitbit account.
Seconds Pro

For just $4.99, Seconds Pro is probably the best workout timer on the App Store.
It can be used as a Tabata interval timer or for general High Intensity Interval Training that you can customize, and mix and match for your own purposes.
It’s easy-to-use interface also has pre-loaded workout timers from BodyRock.tv as well as Mens Health magazine if you want to mix it up a bit at home or at your gym.

November 16, 2013I use this new app that just came out called PR Wall:
http://prwallapp.com
It is simple, quick and to the point when it comes to entering your results, finding your PRs and tracking WODs. Plus you can add videos and pics of you/your workouts.
Hands down the best app for tracking your WODs and body progress. Highly recommended.
